What is Telehealth in Speech Therapy?

All assessment and intervention sessions are delivered online with a qualified speech and language therapist. Using an online platform to conduct therapy (Telehealth) is becoming increasingly popular. With the high demand for therapy, Telehealth is a modern approach that offers greater flexibility and ease of access for clients and therapists.

A speech pathologist can bring their expertise in speech, language, and literacy disorders directly to their patients’ homes using telehealth. Through video calls, screen sharing, and interactive activities, therapists can work with individuals of all ages to assess, diagnose, and treat many communication challenges.

Speech pathologists create a personalised therapy plan, providing guidance and support to improve speech sound production, language use, reading and writing skills, and social communication. They also educate families and caregivers, equipping them with strategies to reinforce progress in daily life. This innovative blend of technology and human touch makes speech therapy more accessible, engaging, and effective.

Below are some of the services we have to offer you. If you have an enquiry about our services, click 'here.'

Speech Therapy

Using fun and interactive activities, patients of all ages with speech sound disorders ranging from mild to severe will benefit from online therapy.

A speech sound disorder is any difficulty in making sounds when talking. These disorders may present as problems with articulation, sounds being made incorrectly, or phonological issues, where sounds are put into the wrong spot in words. Children and adults can experience these challenges which can affect social interactions and academic performance. All evidence points to early intervention being beneficial to support young talkers. There are many sound errors that can be 'age appropriate.' If you are concerned about your, or a loved ones speech sounds, book in an online consultation.

Accent Modification

Accent modification is a fascinating part of a speech and language therapist's work for French and English language speakers. â€‹

Accent modification can enhance communication clarity, boost confidence, and improve social and professional interactions. It’s a collaborative process that requires commitment and practice but can be incredibly rewarding.

The therapist will work with you to assess your current accent, including sounds or patterns you may struggle with. Then, a personalised plan will be created with you to work on sound production, intonation (the rise and fall of the voice), word stress (emphasis on syllables in words), listening and imitation, and then practice and feedback.

Language Intervention

Expressive language is the skills we use to share thoughts and feelings, whether we're talking, writing, or any non-verbal cues. It includes things like choosing the right words or symbols and putting sentences together. On the other side, receptive language skills are how we understand what others are saying or writing, like in conversations or following instructions in the classroom. Both are important for conversation, writing a text message or doing homework and general social skills!

When working on your language skills with online therapy, you will engage with the latest evidence-based intervention to support your skills. Your language needs will be targeted in therapy using popular programs, such as Story Champs or Colourful Semantics.

Voice Disorders

A speech and language therapist is trained to support patients in assessing, diagnosing, and treating voice disorders. Assessing a voice disorder can involve obtaining a patient's perception of their voice and what type of voice user they may be (professional or casual), requesting imaging with your Doctor via a laryngoscope, and measuring the pitch, loudness and overall quality of a patient's voice.

Therapy techniques can include breathing exercises, vocal warm-ups that help relax the muscles we use to talk, and training for pitch and/or volume changes. Voice therapy can also involve vocal hygiene to ensure you drink enough water, avoiding or minimising damaging behaviours such as yelling, and identifying and reducing irritants such as excessive smoking or drinking coffee or alcohol.

Regular check-ins regarding voice disorders are essential as they can be lifelong conditions requiring monitoring and support.

Literacy Support

Literacy is the incredible skill of reading and writing. Literacy opens up a world of possibilities and allows you to communicate with others, understand information in the real world, and connect with people no matter how far they may be. Beyond just the basics, literacy empowers you to read and understand written texts and respond to questions or statements you see. Increasing your literacy skills paves the way for personal growth and academic achievement. When choosing online literacy therapy, you will work using the Sounds Write program, a highly effective intervention program that supports learners from school age through adulthood. There is no age limit when it comes to building good literacy.

Academic Support

A therapist plays a critical role in providing academic support for students with language or literacy difficulties.

A speech and language therapist is able to work alongside teachers and educational staff to ensure that a student's condition is understood and support strategies can be identified.

An individual education plan may be created so parents, teachers, and students are aware of these strategies and quality teaching practices can be implemented in the classroom. Studies show there are at least 2 students in each classroom with developmental language difficulties. By addressing speech, language and literacy concerns in the classroom, students are able to reach their full potential and not be held back by any communication deficits. It is a basic human right that each person has access to an education. Steps to ensuring all students receive equal opportunities is a satisfying part of being a speech an language therapist.
